FAQ: ILLITERATI
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What do you mean by “cooperative survival word game”?

Cooperative: Everyone is on the same team. All players win together or lose together. Players have individual objectives, but you will need to collaborate and coordinate if you want to win.

Survival: Every round will be a battle for survival. Spell words using up all available tiles, and you’ll advance to the next round. Fail to do so, and 1 letter will be permanently removed from the game, bringing you ever closer to defeat. If you want to win, you’ll have to make sure your team survives long enough to make it to the “Final Chapter”. But the longer the game takes, the more devastating the Illiterati attacks become, making victory an even more herculean task.

What about “Quarterbacking”?

“Quarterbacking” refers to one player calling all the shots in a cooperative game. We know it’s a common problem in cooperative games, so we designed Illiterati to mitigate quarterbacking by (1) giving players both individual and team objectives and (2) placing time constraints that will require all players to be engaged, rather than sitting back and letting the most experienced player carry them.

Is the game language dependent? Will there be foreign translations?

This Kickstarter is only for the English version of Illiterati. That being said, we are currently in talks with a large publisher who is interested in “localizing” Illiterati (i.e. creating versions in different languages). However, this may take months or even years and is by no means guaranteed. Regardless, non-English translations will not impact the timeline for this Kickstarter and will be announced as more information becomes available.

Is Illiterati Kickstarter Exclusive?

No, the Standard Edition will be available through traditional distribution channels, though we aren’t certain about the Deluxe Edition at this point. At a minimum, the Deluxe Edition will be available through us (Pledge Manager, Website and Conventions) while supplies last, so don’t feel pressured to back now in fear of missing out.

What’s the difference between Standard and Deluxe?

Both versions offer the same amazing gameplay for 1-5 players with high quality components. The Deluxe Edition takes it up a level by providing the following enhancements: 144 Screen-Printed Wooden Tiles, a Sliding 2-Piece Box, a Jeweled Sand-Timer, and 2x Screen-Printed Bags featuring the Illiterati title and logo.

Will you be using a pledge manager? Can I pledge $1 now, and get access to the pledge manager?

Yes - All pledge levels will provide full access to our pledge manager, BackerKit.

How / When will shipping be charged?

Shipping will be charged post-campaign, through our pledge manager, BackerKit - a platform where you can confirm your order, upgrade your pledge, add extras, and pay the shipping costs.

Why and where are you charging Sales Tax / VAT?

We don’t want to - we have to. Recent legislation has made it a requirement to collect and remit sales tax and VAT in several jurisdictions. Our projections indicate those regions will be limited to the UK, EU, California and Florida. If you are located in any of those regions, you will be charged a specific percentage in accordance with the applicable tax rate.

What is “Customs Friendly Shipping?”

In short, it means we’ve taken steps to save you time and money on shipping!

The #TLDR: It means our logistics partners will arrange for the game to be shipped from within your local country or region, thus avoiding import fees and taxes (we pay them on your behalf). This has often been coined the “Stonemaier Method,” allowing us to make our games available in as many countries as possible. “Customs friendly shipping” is available for the United States, UK, European Union, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa*, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Is there a Group Pledge option?

Purchasing multiple units (on a single order, shipped to a single address) will provide savings on shipping, but we encourage you to reach out to your local FLGS (Friendly Local Game Store) and work with them for potential increased savings. Based on the destination, each additional unit will ship for $3 / $5 / $25 each. See Shipping Section for details.

What is the total count and size of the cards?

Between the Books, Villains, Library Cards, Play Chart and Burn Tracker, we anticipate there being <100 total cards. All cards will be “Dixit Sized” - (80 x 120mm / 3.15 x 4.72in). They’re big and awesome! The Sleeve Pack ($5) we offer has enough sleeves for all of the cards with plenty of leftovers.

Can I add a copy of Rival Restaurants in the pledge manager?

Yes and No. Both the Retail and Deluxe versions of Rival Restaurants, Back For Seconds, as well as previous add-ons will be available for purchase from our website (www.gapcloserpublishing.com) for the duration of the campaign. Purchases made through our website are available for immediate shipment; however, as stock is limited in most regions, once it runs out, it’s out. If there are extra units available after the campaign, they will be offered in the pledge manager, but we can’t guarantee them.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
